Buyer's Guide: Pet Dna Test

Pet Dna Test

A pet DNA test can quickly tell you if you have a genetic predisposition to certain diseases. You may have heard that the best way to find out if you are at risk is to have a DNA test. Well, a pet DNA test is the simplest way to determine your genealogy. Before we go any further, let me tell you exactly how a pet DNA test works. First, you collect samples of your pet's saliva or blood from him or her, and then you send those samples to a DNA lab for testing.

There are several different DNA testing options, and a pet DNA test will use one of them. A DNA test for dogs uses a tiny swab which you carefully put in your dog s mouth and carefully collect swabbed saliva from the mouth. Some tests only require a tiny amount of blood to be extracted for better accuracy. These tests are then returned to the lab for analysis.

Most labs will accept DNA samples from both dogs and cats and perform the necessary testing. However, if the results show that you are a genetic match for one particular breed, then you can embark on looking for other similar breeds within the same group. For example, you could find that your dog is descended from ancestors of the Doberman Pincher, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Basset Hound, and Great Dane. Now, you may want to embark on a search for other breeds if this is your first pet DNA test.

A pet dna test will also help you decide if you are at risk for certain health conditions. If you are a senior, diabetic, or an athlete, then you may wish to find out if you possess genetic markers indicative of these disorders. A doctor can conduct a complete blood work panel but this takes longer and may not be sufficient to reveal some subtle health problems.

In addition to tracking down genetic makeup, pet dna tests can also provide information about ancestry. DNA inheritance seems to depend on genetic makeup more than anything else. Some breeds seem to have distinctive traits common to only one or two members of their group while other breeds may share everything. The results of a comparison can help reveal the true breed of your dog.

A previous study concluded that there are nine common dog breeds that are most genetically alike. These include the Affenpinscher, the Akita, the Boston Terrier, the Boxer, the Basset, the Beagle, the Bichon Frise, the Bogue Hound, the Bulldog, the Bulldogge, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and the Cavalier King Charles Terrier. Obviously, all of these breeds have different strengths and weaknesses. A pet DNA test can help reveal what the strengths and weaknesses of each breed are so you can choose the ones you want to keep as part of your family. Although every breed has both strong and weak points, some have greater strengths than others.

Some breeds have more noticeable genetic markers compared to the rest. The American Staffordshire Terrier and the English Mastiff are two breeds that have been identified as possessing unique muscular characteristics. They possess specific traits common to only one breed and are often bred together to form a very powerful working dog. But they are also very different in appearance with long coats and silky eyes that make them appear as though they came from the same breed. Pet DNA tests can reveal if these traits are present in the breed you want to own.

If you want to track down pedigrees for the purebreds in your home, there are many online sources where you can get canine DNA tests. The best ones have detailed instructions on how to complete the tests correctly. The tests usually take between one to three days to complete depending on how comprehensive the kit is. A simple dog DNA test can let you know whether the dog you're considering has pedigrees from several different breeds, or whether the dog has one documented pedigree. Kits are available in various price ranges so it's up to you to determine which kit will provide you with the information you need.
