In order to determine whether you need a Vitamin D supplement, you first need to know your exact blood level on a regular basis. Ideally, you should get enough vitamin D through diet. But if you don't, a home blood test can help you find out. A blood test is usually performed at the doctor's office or at a vitamin supplement manufacturer. The test will tell you how much vitamin D is present in your blood stream.
An at home vitamin D test measures the amount of vitamin D found in your blood stream. It measures the concentration of vitamin D in your blood. One at a laboratory will cost about $300. A test kit comes with a test strip, a lancet used to prick your skin, an anticoagulant and instructions for interpreting the results.

But keep in mind that results from a home kit are only accurate if you give a truthful answer to the questionnaire.
