Buyer's Guide: Home Radon Test

Home Radon Test - Is Your Home at an Increased Risk of High Radon Levels?

Home Radon Testing Kits are convenient and easy to use for non-professional home inspectors. Home inspectors use Radon Testing Kits to test homes for radon content. Short term test kits capture a quick but accurate snapshot of the radon presence in a home. Longer term radon testing provides a higher accuracy with a more thorough sampling, sometimes up to a year.

Radon gases are naturally present in our atmosphere, but they pose little health threat unless they are released into the air. Home inspectors are trained to look for evidence of radon in a home. The most effective way to test a home for radon is with a home radon test kit. When a gas or substance cannot be seen by the naked eye, but is present in a sample, then it is considered to be radon.

Most home inspectors do not perform Radon Testing at the basement level. Basement tests are generally only performed on new houses that have not been built yet and then only if the house is older than 15 years. For older houses, the sole purpose of the Radon Test is to find out whether there is active radon present in the basement. Some kits can also be used to measure levels of asbestos in the basement.

In order to have a more accurate reading, one should buy a home radon test kit that has a high quality detector. In order to get an accurate reading, the detector should be calibrated and have a high precision. The High Performance Test Filter (HPT) is the most important part of all radon kits. It needs to be replaced according to specifications and once this happens, then the results will be accurate and complete.

The other important thing to look for is whether the Radon Testing kits include a pre-catalytic converter and/or pre-mixer. This is extremely important as it allows the gas to be broken down easily and therefore, with a shorter time, it can be safely removed from your house. If you choose a Radon Reduction System then you need to get a Radon Reduction converter and/or pre-mixer with every test. It is imperative to make sure that you go through the instructions that come with your Radon Testing kits very carefully. They may sound like a breeze but it's not and you could be missing out on some very important information if you do not read them carefully.

It's imperative that you choose your Radon Testing kit based on its ability to reduce radon gas levels in the basement in the shortest possible time. You also need to make sure it has a high accuracy so that you don't waste your money or get the wrong results. So, how can you identify which of the many Radon Reduction Kits is best for your basement? The first thing you need to look for in a Radon Reduction kit is whether it has been approved by the EPA. There are other government agencies such as the New York State Department of Health that also need to approve a kit before it can be sold so make sure that the agency from which you are buying the Radon Test has that seal of approval.

The second thing you should look for when you purchase a Radon Reduction kit is whether it has a estimated maximum effectiveness or an annual action level. An annual action level is the best way to determine the efficiency of a kit as it gives you a more accurate measurement of how many Radon particles you can remove from your home each year. However, an estimated maximum effectiveness will mean that it will perform better than the annual maximum if the Radon Levels in your Basement stay below a certain point for an entire year. So, the Annual Action Level is not the only thing you should look for when selecting a Radon Reduction kit. You should also look for the amount of time that the mitigation process takes from the completion of the Radon Reduction Test to the start of reduced levels of Radon in your home. This is important because you want to be assured that the kit you buy will work as intended.

Home Radon Testing is available in many places across the United States and in Pennsylvania. It is important to make sure that your home has Radon removed if it is above a certain level or under a certain level. If you have been advised that Radon is present in your home, it is vital that you get a Radon Test done to find out what levels you are currently at. If you have already had a Radon Test and you find out that the levels are too high, you can then take action to remove Radon from your home before the levels become too dangerous.
