Urine analysis results may come as a great surprise to a person. A person suffering from an ailment like kidney disease may fail to respond to the prescription he is getting from his doctor to take as a treatment. The kidneys usually excrete a substance called "Cotinine". This is the main component of the drug Adderall.
When this medicine is taken for a prolonged period, more than required, then it starts showing some side effects on the body. The patient may experience nausea and headache which are often mistaken as a withdrawal symptom. But, it is not. It may be caused by a failure in the blood stream to carry out proper transport of "Cotinine" from the kidneys to the bloodstream. A low level of "Cotinine" in the blood means low level of treatment and a failure to cure the patient.
In order to diagnose a failed cotinine urine test, medical history is needed. This is essential since doctors generally perform a DNA test to detect genetic diseases. Failure to perform a DNA test does not mean that a patient has a negative gene. It just means that he has failed to respond properly to the medicine being provided. For the failed urine test, medical history and a failed urinalysis are needed. Failure to respond properly to the medicine does not necessarily mean that there was a failed cotinine drug.
Urine specimen taken from the patients suffering from a renal failure indicate that there is more than required in the urine. The failed urine test is usually performed on a day when normal urine is absent. The test results show a positive result for the patients suffering from renal failure. Therefore, they should undergo further tests such as blood and platelet count and do all necessary treatments.
Other indications of failed cotinine tests lie in the failure of the test materials used. In such cases, other urine samples taken from different people may also give the same negative results. However, this does not always mean that a drug-free life is impossible. There are instances when a failed urine test indicates that the drug is indeed present in the body and may cause further problems.
Other indications of failed cotinine urine test results include failure to detect drug presence in the body. This happens when the tester for the drug is unable to detect it even after consuming a large quantity of the medicine. Patients suffering from a kidney disease may fail to react to medication used to treat that disease. These failures are also known to occur among patients taking medications for high blood pressure and depression.
The failure of the drug test can also be attributed to improper sample collection or handling. It is possible that the drug test used is not sensitive enough to catch even the slightest traces of the drug. As a result, the patient may still pass the urine test despite consuming a large quantity of the medicine. A failed cotinine urine test can also be caused by failure of equipment used in performing the test.
If a failed cotinine urine test is consistent with other indications of failed drug tests, further diagnostic procedures may be needed to determine which of the aforementioned reasons is responsible for the failure. For example, blood levels may be markedly low but failed urine tests indicate that the blood concentration is normal. In such cases, more complex procedures such as blood tests for chemistry and DNA analysis may be necessary. In the meantime, patients should consult their doctors and undergo any necessary treatments.
