Buyer's Guide: Coil Tester

Coil Testers

A good quality coil tester can be made by a standard contact point tester assembly with a standard automotive distributor. Any distributor in any automobile would work well, as long as it too had an operational condenser and check valve. You would then need to test to see that both the contacts were opening up about 0.018 inches at a time. In addition, you need to have a piece of paper on the other end to keep track of the reading so that you do not overheat the coils.

A dry cell coil tester is also available, if you want to test the electrical components of the coils without involving heating. This type has two connections - one for the positive and one for the negative. One end of the coil is connected to a negative link while the other ends are connected to the positive.

The first step in testing the coils, known as a pre-test, will be to turn the ignition switch on. When a spark occurs, the tester should give a positive or warning sign. If this happens, the tester has detected a wet contact. Once the spark calms down, the tester should give another reading. You can then discard this option and go to the distributor for a service or replacement coil.

A Square Wave Generator will help test the ignition module if the tester did not get a positive result. You need to start the vehicle and put it in gear. After everything is warm up, plug in the terminals and run the square wave generator on either battery or the power. This test will give you an accurate reading of the resistance of the coils.

To use your coil tester, you should look for models that include a serial number. The serial number is located inside the cover of the coils. You can find model numbers on the box and usually under the brand name of your model of vehicle.

Before you plug in the square wave generator, ensure that there are no power cuts present. These are signals from your vehicle's alternator. If your ignition module and coils without this box are working properly, you should be able to hear a constant beeping noise. Do not open your vehicle's hood until you have completed the test!

Another option is to use an external spark plug or a spark plug indicator. This is more convenient and works best if you do not have access to your vehicle. However, this option does not give you an accurate reading. This is because the spark plugs work on the same principle as the induction kit.
