A cable tester is basically an electronic device employed to test the electrical contacts in a component or a wire cable. Its basic function is to check if the electrical connection works and if it does, whether there is any damage to the wire. Basic cable testers are simple continuity testers which simply verify the presence of a conductive pathway between contacts of the cable and check the correct wiring of connector on the cable. If any part of the cable is damaged, this will automatically result in an audible click or banging noise. Such devices are also used for the purpose of testing the connection of household wiring such as in the common electrical outlets of all the members of a household. Most common household wires are usually protected with a plastic sleeve having a metallic sheath around its edges.
The first step to troubleshooting a poor cable is to make sure that the power has been switched off. Then disconnect the power connection and try disconnecting the circuit from the motherboard. If these efforts prove futile, then use the appropriate type of tester suitable for your specific purpose. There are mainly three types of testers suitable for different purposes:
Anti static wrist testers: These testers are essentially used to test the operation of electric circuits in an area where there are electrical equipments such as television, VCR etc. The most commonly found application of these testers is to test the performance of cables. You can conveniently fix these testers near the area to be tested. The tester is inserted into the plug which is either plugged into the appliance or the circuit outlet. The probe of the cable tester moves along the electrical pathway to detect any resistance in the wiring.
RFID network cable testers: These testers use radio-frequency identification technology to determine the quality of the wiring or the cable connections. The main advantages of using this kind of tester are that it is portable and it can easily be carried from one location to another. They are very reliable as they make sure that the tester is emitting high frequency signals which are picked by the probes within a few feet of their position. These devices can also identify broken or disconnected wire connections within a few feet. These testers can easily be attached to the testing appliances as well as to the network cable trays. If required you can also detach the RFID tester from the appliance and discard it after the testing process is completed.
Multi-functional Cable Testers: The next useful device that you should have at your disposal is a multi-functional cable tester. These devices are also known as multi-conductor testers. These instruments enable you to test different cable connections simultaneously. You can use the probe of this multi-functional tester to examine different cable connections which are present as well as those which are absent in the same cable connections.
While choosing the multi-functional cable tester it is very important to choose one that has the capability to test not only the coaxial, SMA, but also the serial cable connections. In addition to this the multi-functional tester should also be able to detect the power passing through the conducting system. These testers come with various features which make them very user friendly. You can find some multi-function testers that are equipped with indicators which allow you to check the condition of the circuit in question. These instruments are particularly useful for checking the status of the power cable connections.
Cable Testers - An aptly named instrument which enables you to test the condition of any given cable is the Cable Warmer. This instrument not only tests the electrical conductivity of the cables, but also warms up the cables to a temperature of 18 degrees below ambient conditions. This tool comes with a digital display that helps you to examine the condition of the wires. It is a very convenient and simple to use tool.
The Cable Troubler is another very efficient and useful device which is ideal for checking the condition of the power cable connections. The device uses electromagnetic impulses in the presence of static charge. This device is very easy to operate as the device has an inbuilt sensor that indicates the presence of static electricity. The device heats up the conductor even as it maintains a constant temperature. Hence the device ensures that the circuit continues to work in the best possible manner after testing has been done.
