There are a number of different types of pH tests available, and you may already have one or more in your own home. When choosing the kit that is right for you, it is important to choose one that uses more than one method to determine alkalinity. The method chosen is determined by both your needs and what you hope to achieve through the test.
The most commonly used pH test is based on the MCL or Methyl Chalcanic Acid method. This is a relatively simple procedure that provides fairly accurate test results. In addition, some laboratory testing machines are capable of conducting two or more pH and Alkalinity tests at the same time, which can save a great deal of time.
Before purchasing a pH or Alkalinity test strip, be sure to understand its various results and reporting specifications. For example, some test strips report the percentage of total alkalinity, total acidity, and total solids in solution, while others report on the concentration of each of those elements. Some test results are extremely sensitive, while others are more widely applicable. For instance, a test that indicates the presence of a heavy metal in water will most likely yield negative results, while one that indicates the presence of sulfur will most likely indicate the presence of other naturally occurring elements.
When purchasing pH and Alkalinity test strips, make sure they are compatible with the types of testing equipment that you will use. Many pH and Alkalinity test strips are compatible with the majority of analytical chemistry instruments, but it is always best to test with the correct equipment. If you test with a variety of different types of equipment, you can compare test results. For instance, you can compare test results with a pH tester to test for the presence of a heavy metal in water or with an Alkalinity analyzer to test for alkalinity. By knowing what types of analytical testing instruments work best with what types of pH and Alkalinity testing strips, you ensure that you will obtain the most accurate results.
Once you have obtained your results, you can begin to analyze your water sample. For instance, if you found a heavy metal in your water sample, you may want to do further testing.
